Republican Crypto Adoption Surpasses Democrats as Trump Embraces Digital Assets
Republican engagement with cryptocurrency has now overtaken Democratic participation, according to a Pew Research survey of 8,512 U.S. adults conducted in late January. While 17% of Democrats reported owning digital assets, Republican ownership climbed to 22%—a notable increase from 16% in 2021. This marks a reversal from pre-2026 trends when both parties held similar levels of crypto adoption.
The shift coincides with former President Donald Trump's dramatic pivot from critic to industry participant. After dismissing cryptocurrencies in 2019 as tools for "unlawful behavior," Trump launched his first NFT collection in 2022 featuring $99 digital trading cards. His family has since deepened their involvement through ventures like World Liberty Financial and the $TRUMP and $MELANIA memecoins—effectively rebranding the former president as a crypto advocate.
